In honour of the anniversary of Walter Benjamin’s death, every September since 2000 Portbou Town Council has organized a Conference on some aspect of Benjamin’s abidingly fertile work. In keeping with the transverse nature of his thought, the Conferences aim to offer a multifaceted vision of the historical and intellectual significance of Benjamin’s work as a major influence on the thinking of the twentieth century and contemporaneity. Conference debates and dialogues range over subjects and themes such as history, memory and exile, the practice of criticism, the sense of art and its relationship to the new technologies, modernity and the belief in progress, the crisis or validity of notions such as Utopia, etc. With a view to extending an awareness and appreciation of Benjamin’s thought and encouraging informed discussion of it, experts in Benjamin’s work from different nationalities and fields (academic, artistic, literary, etc) are invited to present Papers.
